Earth Month 2025 was one for the books! From rallies and advocacy days to inspiring webinars, Sierra Club Connecticut showed up loud, proud, and very green. 🌿

Whether you joined us in person, helped behind the scenes, or cheered us on from afar—thank you for being part of the movement for a healthier planet and a more just future.

Here’s a look at how we made waves across the state this April:

All Month — Tabling at Events Across the State

Volunteers and staff connected with communities at our Sierra Club table at events across the state including Glastonbury, Hartford, Storrs, Newtown, New Haven, Farmington, and Groton.

✊ April 5 — Hands Off Rally

Sierra Club Connecticut volunteers and staff were a part of the over 1,400 “Hands Off!” protests across the country. From Capitol to city halls, we took a stand against the billionaire takeover and corruption of the Trump administration, the slashing of essential programs like Medicaid and Social Security, and the ongoing attacks on immigrants, trans people, and other marginalized communities. Our voices rang out in unity for justice and protection for all.

♻️ April 11 — CT Waste Reduction Advocacy Day

In collaboration with CT Zero Waste and as part of Food Waste Prevention Week, we hosted a powerful advocacy day at the State Capitol. Over 40 community members joined us to support two critical bills: H.B. 6917, which bans polystyrene products, and H.B. 6229, which boosts food donation, bans the use of polystyrene products, and invests in composting initiatives. We held a press conference alongside Representatives Mary Mushinsky, John-Michael Parker, and Geraldo Reyes to call for action on the waste crisis in our state.

⚖️ April 9 & 15 — Support for PURA Chair Marissa Gillett

We showed up twice at the Capitol to advocate for the renomination of Marissa Gillett as Chair of the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA)—and she was successfully confirmed for another four-year term! Chair Gillett has been a bold leader in aligning Connecticut’s regulatory decisions with environmental responsibility, energy justice, and economic sustainability. Her work is especially vital for residents on fixed incomes and in underserved communities, and she continues to lead on grid modernization and clean energy.

🌎 April 22 — Earth Day Highlights

We kicked off Earth Day with an energizing “Honk for Climate Action” rally outside the Legislative Office Building. With signs raised high and chants echoing, we reminded everyone near the Capitol that urgent climate action is needed—and in the two hours we rallied, we got hundreds of honks in support.

Following the “Honk” action, Sierra Club volunteers and staff joined Sunrise Connecticut for a youth climate day at the Legislative Office Building. Our very own intern Sena Wazer and Volunteers Sydney Collins and Ashen Harper presented during the day on meaningful topics like the STOP Project Maple campaign.

Later, we hosted the “Defending Our Planet” webinar featuring U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal and State Representative John-Michael Parker. They shared insights into current environmental legislation at both the federal and state levels and left us with hopeful words for the future. 🎥 Watch the webinar here.

We wrapped up the day at two events. At Central Connecticut State University, we participated in the Environmental Justice and Democracy Panel. Joined by Senator Rick Lopes and Representative Robert Sanchez, we had the opportunity to speak with students about the state of climate change in Connecticut and the vital intersection of climate justice and democracy. The energy in the room was electric, and the message was clear: young people are ready to lead. At Manchester Community College we had the opportunity to speak with students, staff, and faculty about the impact of climate change in Connecticut and opportunities to take action.

On Earth Day, the Connecticut Mirror published an article by Julianna Larue titled Earth Day 2025 — CT Must Lead Where Trump Is Failing.”

From all of us at Sierra Club Connecticut: thank you for making Earth Month 2025 unforgettable. Your advocacy, presence, and passion are what power this movement. Let’s keep pushing forward—for people and the planet. 🌎
