Zero Waste Coalition Update
Sierra Club Connecticut worked with the CT Zero Waste Coalition this summer, supporting groups in two Connecticut municipalities fighting against waste expansion projects that have the potential to add pollution to their communities. Join us in supporting waste reduction methods to eliminate negative environmental impacts and disproportionate burdens on Connecticut's low-income and communities of color.
Take a look at the highlights from Sierra Club Connecticut’s current campaigns and what we’ve been working on. As always, thank you to all of our volunteers—we couldn’t do this without you!
There Are Many Ways to Connect
One thing that became clear in the last year and a half is that you can’t keep Sierra Club members inside for long! We will find ways to connect and share our love of nature and continue to work for our planet. Come join us!
Wildlife Committee Update
Sierra Club Connecticut’s Wildlife Committee has been advocating for prohibiting the use of exotic wild animals in traveling animals acts and will continue that fight moving forward. Even in Connecticut, though far away from these great species’ native habitats, we can do our part to protect these majestic animals.
Legislative Wrap Up 2021
The Connecticut legislature’s regular session wrapped up on June 9, 2021. There were some environmental victories and some losses, and unfortunately the legislature failed to aggressively address climate change mitigation. With time running out on the planet’s tipping point, action this year was discouraging and insufficient.
If you want to dive deeper into connecting environmentalism to social justice issues or if you’re looking for a guide or inspiration to transform our energy systems, Shalanda Baker’s new book might be a good summer read for you. Check out this review, from the perspective of a Sierra Club Connecticut activist.

Outings Program Revamped
Our Chapter Outings program has been on hiatus for the past couple years due to the pandemic and other factors. In that time, our national organization worked to revamp Sierra Club’s Outings training. We’re excited to get back outdoors on the trail to enjoy the rest of the season with you!
Many Fronts in SC CT's Fight Against Gas Expansion
In order to avert the worst consequences of the climate crisis, we need to be undertaking an all-out effort to decarbonize our economy. Yet, the entities in Connecticut continue to encourage the use of fossil fuels, particularly fossil gas. Sierra Club Connecticut is actively opposing gas expansion on many fronts.
Sierra Club and others have been fighting to stop the proposed 650MW power plant for years. There's been rallies, op-eds, letters, phone calls, petitions, and more. Help to keep up the pressure and stop this unneeded and unwanted power plant by sending a message to Governor Lamont today!
