Join us for a collaborative book club with Sierra Club CT and Sunrise CT! We will be discussing the book “Consumed: The Need for Collective Change: Colonialism, Climate Change, and Consumerism" by Aja Barber. We hope to facilitate intergenerational discussions on consumerism and climate change, and so we encourage everyone who is young to invite along a more mature person (parent, grandparent, uncle/aunt, neighbor, or friend) and everyone that is more mature to invite a younger person (High school - freshman year or older - daughter/son, niece /nephew, neighbor, or friend) to our discussion! We'd love for our book club members to help shape these conversations, so please feel free to prepare any questions or topics that really resonated with you so we can all learn from each others' perspectives.

Consumed explores the systemic injustices embedded in our current consumer industries and consumption patterns, taking a particular focus on the fashion and textile industry, and the harms they perpetuate on people and the planet. The fashion industry has a massive environmental impact: it is currently responsible for nearly 10% of global carbon emissions (more than all international flights and maritime shipping combined), and it is the second-biggest consumer of water. Aja Barber then invites us to challenge our relationship with consumerism and to unlearn the messages that tell us we'll never have or never be enough.

We will meet every other week on Zoom starting on Tuesday, March 14th at 7pm.
