Advocacy and Outings Combine for a Stop Fossil Fuels Bike Ride in Connecticut

A nice Saturday afternoon bike ride and gas expansion opposition rolled into one on May 17 in New Haven.

Sierra Club Connecticut, Sunrise New Haven, Radical Adventure Riders, and No Pipeline Expansion (NOPE) Northeast hosted a bike ride in New Haven looking at fossil fuel infrastructure throughout the city. Over 30 people attended.

The five mile route began at the Bradley Street Bicycle Co-op and made stops at various fossil fuel infrastructure and polluting facilities along the way including the Enbridge pipeline where it crosses alongside a bridge near the intersection of State and James Streets; English Station, an abandoned coal and oil power plant in Fair Haven; and the Yale Central power plant.

At each stop the participants learned more about the impact of fossil fuels on the community, health, and the climate, as well as about proposals to expand pipelines and methane gas infrastructure in Connecticut, including:

  • In Brookfield, TC Energy and Berkshire Hathaway want to double the size of a pipeline compressor station that pollutes the local community and emits huge amounts of greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Enbridge, a giant Canadian fossil fuel corporation, has proposed to expand their fracked gas pipeline system that cuts across Connecticut.

  • The State of Connecticut has proposed that the Capitol Area System in Hartford will continue to burn fracked gas to heat government buildings, despite the availability of non-fossil fuel alternatives.

Sierra Club is actively engaged in opposing gas expansion and invites you to learn more about why gas expansion is a bad idea.

Many thanks to the Sierra Club volunteers, members, and staff who participated in this fun and informative event, especially Sydney Collins, Martha Klein, Steve Lewis, and Sena Wazer.
